Roots

To Us,

The 21st century South Asian women sandwiched between traditional values and modernity; may we keep liberating ourselves from the invisible yet prominent shackles of society. May we honour the women who have walked the earth before us and laid out a path. About time we embrace our natural golden armour which glows in the sun. Hold that peculiar nose higher than ever for it carries ancestral dues. The shape of our body is not the determiner of the essence of our beauty. Let no aunty tell us any different, for she herself is bound by the patriarchal ways and does not know any better. The essence of our beauty is in being a woman itself, for we carry the knowledge to raise humankind. May we always be valiant enough to satiate our ambition and independence. Whether rooted deep in the native land or planted in a faraway land, let the roots of sisterhood broaden as we ferociously shatter the shackles with each choice made solely for ourselves. Let Us never forget that we are the chosen ones to empower, of the millions unborn and the millions tied down.

From,

One of Us.

A huge shout out to fellow South Asian sister Sruthi Pujara, founder of Light & Life Productions for bringing the Roots project to life. After months of brainstorming various ideas on what it means to be a woman, specifically of South Asian descent, we are finally able to share our perception. There is more to come from this collaboration on South Asian representation, womanhood, mental health and many more, honestly wherever our creativity leads us. Do not forget to check out Sruthi Pujara (@tonal_tales on Instagram) and give her a follow to light up your Insta feed. Stay tuned for more and enjoy Roots xx

Days of old

Hey there! How’s everything going? Summer has come to an end in Melbourne. It is finally time to dress cozy. I have been occupied with the usual, research at uni and deciding on the ideas for my next blog post. If you have been following me on instagram (@aditisawarkar), you had know that I recently got a tattoo! My friend and I went to the 2017 Rites of passage tattoo festival and decided to be impulsive for once. Tattoos are so addictive, I have already started to think about the next design.

So few weeks ago, my family and I took a short road trip to Daylesford, a town near Melbourne. We went a little further ahead to Ballarat. However, we missed out on the famous Sovereign Hill museum as we reached there around 5.30pm. The 1800s, an important era in the making of Melbourne still reflects in the architecture of Daylesford and Ballarat. I was so intrigued by this, that it actually made me think about the history behind a pair of dungaree. Don’t worry, I won’t be writing an essay here about the history! Apparently, dungaree originated in India, in a region called Dongri in Mumbai (would have never guessed it even in my wild guesses!).

It might come as a surprise, but the last time I wore a short dungaree, was probably at the age of 8. It was about time to live the days of old!

I wore an acid wash short dungaree with ripped details. As the dungaree was of a light colour, I decided to pair it up with an off-shoulder black crop and black boots with knitted detail on the ankle. The knitted detail compliments the subtle white stripes on the crop. Yes, just as everyone else, I have also indulged in a pair of fishnet stockings. I have been wearing these fishnet stockings under a pair of ripped leggings too! I love fishnet stockings. Need I say more?

Urban

Hey there! Hope the first month of 2017 has been a great start for you. It has been a really good start for me and I am very excited for the coming months. Last weekend, I got the chance to collaborate with my dear friend, Karen and it was so much fun! Fun is an understatement. Karen not only exuberates confidence in what she wears but is also extremely talented! It was a pleasure collaborating with her and I hope to do many more in the future. 🙂 We have put together two casual urban looks for this piece which represents urban in our own colour.

Look 1: A pair of jeans, shirt and platform oxford shoes

Styling oneself in a minimalist way is an art in itself. Here we have tried to add a bit of edginess by wearing Oxfords.

Look 2: A leather skirt, shirt and black & gold heels

A leather skirt is also a minimalist way to make a simple shirt look stylish. For this one, we have paired it with a blue shirt which I borrowed from my dad’s closet along with black & gold heels. The gold in the heels adds a whole new level sophistication to this look.

The urban woman today, we believe, is someone who is always on the run, yet she never forgets to look flawless. She not only has an impeccable taste in fashion but also let’s her personality shine through the fabrics. She is confident, independent and believes in her dreams. She has immense admiration for all the women who cross her path and uplifts them in every possible way. She also shares an unspoken bond of sisterhood with them. She is a free spirit who no more conquers the world only in a pair of heels, but also in a pair of oxfords!

Explore

There are endless possibilities. Explore everyday and discover something new about yourself. Let your imagination run wild. Have an open mind and don’t ever limit yourself. It is okay to feel a little intimidated by the vast possibilities and uncertainties. Take risks. You will try. You will fail. You will learn. You will grow. Nothing is meant to be perfect. Let your hair down and be a little messy. Just don’t ever get caught up in the mess: the past experiences. They exist to take you a step further in your exploration. When you encounter moments that make you smile, stand still and embrace them. Break the mundanity. Try something totally different, something you’d only imagine in your wildest dreams. You might think you are bounded but you aren’t. Change your perspective. Intoxicate yourself and the world around you with kindness and compassion. Hold your head high. Believe in yourself. Live.

Hey there! I really hope you enjoyed this and have had an amazing day so far. Floral dresses are a must-have as you can easily dress them up or just wear them if you want to create a minimalist look. The cut outs add a flirty element to this dress. Here, I have paired up the dress with pink flats as there is a bit of pink in the floral print. This is a good way to style prints and pop of colours. Choose a colour from the print and use it to accessorise the outfit. Anklets and body jewellery will be a trend in 2017, so I recommend to invest in a few. You can always use the necklace chain as an anklet as that’s what I did for this look. I have also used a dainty necklace and a bracelet to accessorise along with a statement ring.

A huge thank you to my mum for capturing these photos. Let me know in the comments section below if you would like me to do more of these. I definitely enjoyed curating this post as it made me think outside the box. I really want this space to exemplify endless creative possibilities. I am also a firm believer in spreading good vibes and positivity. So, I sincerely wish that you let your imagination to run wild and explore everyday. 🙂

Choker Obsession

Hey there!

How’s your first week and the weekend been so far? Mine was fairly decent, just work, guest at home and worked on this DIY.

Do you have any resolutions for this year? Recently, I came across an article while watching a Whack video about 33 books that everyone should read before turning 30 (Link: http://www.businessinsider.com.au/33-books-to-read-before-30-2015-11). So, I am planning to read at least 10 this year. Let’s see if I actually accomplish it! I will definitely keep you posted. Also, if you haven’t heard of the Whack channel on YouTube, then you should check it out. Freishia B is one of my favourites and her videos are full of crazy facts. She has a lot to offer. 🙂

Anyways, for this post, I thought of doing something different and gave video a try. This is my first time actually shooting and editing. It was so much fun! I have tried to show as much variety in design as I could under 20 bucks. Yes, these 6 chokers are under 20 dollars.

  1. Mesh: I think this choker is the rarest of all. I haven’t seen many mesh ones in the market. So, you are definitely going to stand out in the crowd. I have worn the choker with a black and white striped top.
  2. Gold Chain: The gold chain gives a classy look to this rather plain black self-tie choker. I have worn this with a printed black top with a bit of orange. You can wear this for a night out.
  3. Self-tie: If you want to invest in only one choker, I would recommend this one. Self-tie chokers are very versatile and can be worn in all different ways. Over here, I have used both the strings and tied them together. I have paired it with a basic V neck crew tee. Self-ties look great on every outfit, but my favourite pairing would be with a solid colour, deep plunge maxi dress.
  4. Boho: The pom poms on this leather string speak for themselves. The colours brighten up any outfit and is a good choice for summer. In this post, I have paired it up with a romantic, off-the-shoulder white lace top.
  5. Denim: This choker is my personal favourite. I love the mix of colours in this denim belt and also the carvings on the elephant. I am all into intricate carvings. I have paired this with a v-neck lace up grey crop top. This choker is perfect when you want to dress up your casual outfit.
  6. Lace: The dusty pink is surely my favourite shade of pink. This dusty pink lace along with the pearls creates a gorgeous elegant look. I have paired this choker with an off-the-shoulder navy dress. This look is perfect for a formal event.

Enjoy the video:

The Style Mashup

Hey there!

Merry Christmas…I hope 2016 has treated you well so far and your Christmas day is filled with full of surprises and some great cherishable moments with your loved ones. Can’t believe this year is almost over!

This is my first blog post. I had been thinking of giving blogging a try for the past few years and I am so excited to finally start this journey!

I have tried to put together a subtle mix of gothic and rocker style, which can be carried off by anyone as there is no right or wrong way when it comes to wearing a certain style. It is all about celebrating one’s uniqueness in every style and to never stop experimenting.

Well, this is my version. I am wearing an all black outfit from head to toe. The leggings and top are from my DIY project. I consider a good pair of ripped leggings/jeans as an essential as it can add a whole new dimension to your look. You can wear them on a day when you don’t feel like putting an effort or are running late. Just make sure that it is the right size and fits your body perfectly.

Instead of using a basic black crew neck tee, I thought of giving peek-a-boo top a go. In this top, there is a gorgeous black mesh with barely visible tiny white dots around the waist. If you are not comfortable to show too much skin but still want to experiment, this is a great way to do it. The peek-a-boo mesh doesn’t necessarily have to be around the waist, you can choose a top with mesh around the neckline, arm or even on the back! I love how the simple white detailing in the mesh compliments the ‘79’ print on the top.

To complete the look, I chose a pair of black combat boots with heels. These shoes are my baby. It’s been almost a year since I have had them and I literally wore them every other day during winter. For the accessories, I have used a bohemian black choker necklace with silver beads and pendant in the centre along with bohemian silver rings with intricate carvings and bracelets. Oh, and the octagonal sunglasses are from the Kmart festival collection for only 6 bucks!

Let me know in the comments section below about the accessories you are totally obsessed with and tag me (@aditisawarkar) in your instagram posts if you experiment with this look or even experiment with a style totally different to yours. I would love to see how you add your individuality to it. 🙂

Until then, enjoy the look and Merry Christmas once again:Aditi-135.jpgAditi-102.jpgAditi-80.jpgAditi-130.jpgAditi-72.jpgAditi-150.jpgAditi-83.jpgAditi-126.jpgAditi-90.jpg                                                                              Location: The University of Melbourne, Parkville
