Roots

To Us,

The 21st century South Asian women sandwiched between traditional values and modernity; may we keep liberating ourselves from the invisible yet prominent shackles of society. May we honour the women who have walked the earth before us and laid out a path. About time we embrace our natural golden armour which glows in the sun. Hold that peculiar nose higher than ever for it carries ancestral dues. The shape of our body is not the determiner of the essence of our beauty. Let no aunty tell us any different, for she herself is bound by the patriarchal ways and does not know any better. The essence of our beauty is in being a woman itself, for we carry the knowledge to raise humankind. May we always be valiant enough to satiate our ambition and independence. Whether rooted deep in the native land or planted in a faraway land, let the roots of sisterhood broaden as we ferociously shatter the shackles with each choice made solely for ourselves. Let Us never forget that we are the chosen ones to empower, of the millions unborn and the millions tied down.

From,

One of Us.

A huge shout out to fellow South Asian sister Sruthi Pujara, founder of Light & Life Productions for bringing the Roots project to life. After months of brainstorming various ideas on what it means to be a woman, specifically of South Asian descent, we are finally able to share our perception. There is more to come from this collaboration on South Asian representation, womanhood, mental health and many more, honestly wherever our creativity leads us. Do not forget to check out Sruthi Pujara (@tonal_tales on Instagram) and give her a follow to light up your Insta feed. Stay tuned for more and enjoy Roots xx

The night before sunrise

With every moment passing

We knew this was coming to an end

New beginnings with sunrise

Were we happy?

Different paths chosen

Last breath of togetherness woven

Reminiscence of the memories

Were we happy?

Lying underneath the stars

Baffled by our perfectly imperfect connection

Wishing upon a shooting star,

for similar intimacy ahead

We will try to be happy. Probably.

Shine bright and be kind! ๐Ÿ™‚

The wait

Itโ€™s waiting for me at the end of this road.

Road meticulously laid,

laid through mountains and woods.

Woods varied with each step,

steps numbered yet uncounted.

Uncounted steps taken into new terrain,

terrain unknown yet familiar.

Familiar faces left behind,

behind with all the mementos.

Itโ€™s waiting for me at the end of this road.

Unsure, uncertain,

taking the remaining numbered steps.

The wait is going to be long.

Shine bright and be kind! ๐Ÿ™‚

Dear almost lover

Wandering through these woods,

our paths crossed.

Before we knew it

we walked together,

further and deeper.

Days passed, months passed,

moments lived and shared.

Throughout our wander

we heard two distinct voices:

soft murmurs of love

and noises of uncertainty.

Deafened by these noises,

we gave in.

Now I wander alone

cherishing our shared memories.

Wondering if we walked together for longer,

just a little further and deeper

Would we finally be enticed by these soft murmurs?

Well, no matter how far you and I wander on our own,

If meant to be’s are real

Wish we give up on the noises

and choose love this time.

What do you see?

What do you see when you look at me?

Stripping me bare with your eyes

Inspecting the curves of my body

Flicking through all the previous ones in your mind.

Slightly taller than the last one,

Definitely fuller than the average ones,

Unsure if the face is attractive enough,

Debating between a five or a six,

Finally settling on a five point five out of ten.

Oh honey, come closer and letโ€™s strip further!

You have only made it to the shallow depth,

unsure if you have enough grit to dive deeper.

Flicking through a book or two instead wouldโ€™ve done you some good,

as my curvaceous hips seem to appear broader than your mind.

Before you go flexing and reducing me down to numbers,

let me remind you that I am a Queen

reigning an entire kingdom,

while you are a knight

battling for this kingdom and others.

Shine bright readers and know your worth! ๐Ÿ™‚

Aditi

Her…

In midst of all the chaos,

Her stillness was captivating.

She was a work of art,

The first work of art.

Untouched and Unrefined,

Purely deep and raw.

In midst of all the normalcy,

Her quirks were dazzling.

She was a rare ruin,

The ethereal ruin.

Yet to be unearthed,

Her mysteries unknown.

In midst of all the happening,

Despite of the far distance between us,

Her warmth and whimsical innocence was heartfelt.

Shine bright and be kind! ๐Ÿ™‚

xoxo,

Aditi
